Apple announced several devices this week, including the new Apple Watch Ultra, iPhone 14 (two sizes), and AirPods Pro 2! If you’d like to hear everything announced in 15 minutes, my recap podcasts runs down the highlights:

In addition to camera improvements across the lineup, the two standout features coming to all iPhone 14 modes are:
  • SOS via Satellite
  • Crash Detection
If you find yourself out in the wilderness with no cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro have the ability to send a text message with your location to emergency services via satellite.
This feature is only available in the U.S. and Canada right now, and will be “free” for two years. Apple didn’t say how much the feature would cost after the two year mark, and it may not work above 60 degrees latitude. Sorry, Alaska.
If you typically opt for the non-pro iPhone models, and you currently have an iPhone 13, this may not be a compelling year to upgrade. While the camera is slightly improved and you can now capture 4K Cinematic mode video, most people probably don’t have use for SOS via satellite.
Crash detection is also unique to the iPhone 14, but if you purchase a new Apple Watch, you can gain that feature without upgrading your iPhone.
For those wanting a larger screen but don’t prefer the more expensive Pro Max models, Apple did bring back the Plus moniker with a new iPhone 14 Plus size. It has the same 6.7-inch screen size as the Pro Max.

iPhone 14 Pro
More significant updates came to the Pro models of iPhone 14. Gone is the notch at the top of the display, replaced with an elongated pill shape that is cleverly utilized to show now playing elements, notifications, and other software icons. This area is called the Dynamic Island (yes, quite a name).

It’s a clever use of space that holds necessary components like the front-facing camera and True-Depth sensors. But that’s not all!
iPhone 14 Pro comes with significant camera improvements with the main camera upgraded to a 48-megapixel sensor. More often iPhone 14 Pro will combine four pixels into one for better light gathering capability. Low-light photos should be noticeably improved, but will end up being 12-megapixel resolution photos.
You can choose to take pictures using Apple’s ProRaw format and force 48-megapixel sized images (but keep in mind those will take up a significant amount of storage).
Pro models also gain SOS via satellite and crash detection features, in addition to the rumored always-on display. iPhone 14 Pro models will dim your wallpaper when placed on a desk face-up, but widgets and time will remain persistently visible on-screen.
When placed face-down or in a pocket, the screen will turn off completely to save battery. With the addition of custom lock screens and Lock Screen widgets in iOS 16 (coming Monday, Sept 12 for everyone), the always-on display will be a fun feature!
Should you upgrade? I believe the camera updates will be significant this year, and the always-on display may be useful. It always depends on budget and what model you current use. I would say if you have an iPhone 11 or earlier, now is a great time to upgrade.
Apple Watch Series 8
Three new Apple Watch models are now available to buy. For those with a recent Apple Watch, Series 6 or 7, the major benefits upgrading to a Series 8 are:
  • Temperature Sensor
  • Crash Detection
  • Faster Processor
This year’s Apple Watch has a new temperature sensor, specifically for ovulation and cycle tracking. Temperature sensing is done while sleeping, and the sensor can’t be used to take your temperature on-demand (like checking for a fever).
Crash detection means emergency services will be contacted in the event of an accident, and the faster processor will most likely go unnoticed save for slightly better battery life.
Should you upgrade? If cycle tracking is as accurate as Apple claims, and you have a Series 5 or older Apple Watch, it’s a great time to upgrade.

Apple Watch SE
Apple’s entry-level Apple Watch received minor updates, namely a faster processor and crash detection. Those buying their first Apple Watch, I would recommend a Series 8 or refurbished Series 7, but Apple Watch SE is great for kids.
Family Setup allows you to setup an Apple Watch with a child iCloud account so they can send and receive text messages, use Find My location sharing, and even track activity, without having an iPhone. It does require you get the cellular models which typically costs $10 per month with your carrier.
We did an Apple Watch SE on Family Setup for our oldest child and it worked great. If you’re not ready to get your child an iPhone, but want to have some connectivity throughout the day, Apple Watch SE is the answer.

Apple Watch Ultra
Probably the most exciting announcement of the event was a new model of Apple Watch: Apple Watch Ultra. Geared toward extreme athletes and adventure seekers, it features:
  • 49mm casing (up from 45mm on regular models)
  • Titanium material
  • 2x brighter screen than Series 8
  • 60 hours of battery life
  • Capable of diving to 130 feet
  • Two speakers with 86-decibel alarm
  • Double GPS antennas for greater accuracy
  • Extra customizable side button
Will most people use these adventure features? Do most pickup truck owners haul thousand pound loads? Probably not. But Apple is directly going after Garmin and other athlete-targeted watches.

AirPods Pro 2
Finally, Apple updated their AirPods Pro 2. If you bought a pair of AirPods Pro at launch, your battery life is most likely abysmal right now. This updated model has a new H2 chip, improved audio quality, swipe gestures on the stem, and better noise cancelling ability.
Even greater updates came to the AirPods Pro 2 case, which now has a built-in speaker to find in the couch, U1 chip for precision finding in the Find My app, and a place to use a lanyard with the case.
If you enjoy AirPods and want great sound quality with noise cancelling features, AirPods Pro 2 are the earbuds to get.

Pre-orders are open for all products announced at the event. iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and Apple Watch Series 8 will be available in-store September 16. Apple Watch Ultra and AirPods Pro 2 are available September 23, and iPhone 14 Plus is coming October.
I should be receiving iPhone 14 Pro in silver on launch day, and Apple Watch Ultra on September 23. Contemplating doing a live unboxing on my YouTube channel, so let me know if you’d like to see that! And subscribe here:

One Last Thing…
I mentioned in the last newsletter about a personal project launching soon. I’ve begun writing about my experiences in church, but still debating how public to make these posts.
Currently I’m only offering access to a select group of readers, and it’s behind a paywall. If you’re interested in that content, reply to this email and I’ll send a link to subscribe there.
